Road Safety Audit for Mackay Ring Road (Stage 1)

Paragon was engaged by Transport and Main Roads to undertake a Post Construction Road Safety Audit of the Mackay Ring Road (Stage 1).  The audit scope also included adjoining sections of local roads and highways.  From the audit, a few potential safety issues were identified.  These issues were passed onto TMR and the design consultant for further investigation.

Road Safety Audits

Project: Post-construction road safety audits

Location: Various

PCE has undertaken Road Safety Audit reports for the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads in the Mackay/Whitsunday region for many roads, intersections and pedestrian facilities, including Mackay Bucasia Road and the Peak Downs Highway.

Road Reconstruction Design

Project: National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement (NDRAA) road reconstruction project

Location: Mackay / Whitsunday Region

As part of the restoration works for damaged roads in the region under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement (NDRRA), PCE provided design services for a number of major road reconstructions in the region, including Mackay-Bucasia Road, Mackay-Habana Road, and Mackay-Eungella Road. The community can now travel along these roads more comfortably and safely.

Intersection Design/Traffic Analysis

Project: St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School (new school)

Location: Mackay-Bucasia Road, Mackay

PCE is currently involved in the construction of a new school at the Mackay Northern Beaches, with a new signalised intersection being constructed on Mackay-Bucasia Road. PCE performed the initial traffic analysis, undertook extensive liaison with the Department on behalf of our Client, did the detailed design and gained approval, and is supervising the construction works. This intersection will become part of a much-travelled route for a lot of parents and children once the school is operational.

Traffic Impact Assessments

Project: Existing quarry expansion

Location: near Peak Downs Highway, Bowen Basin

PCE has undertaken many Traffic Impact Assessments as required by the Queensland Department of Main Roads as part of development approvals, including the significant expansion of a quarry within the Bowen Basin that accesses directly onto a State Controlled Road, and uses the Peak Downs Highway for the majority of deliveries. Assessment of the access for manoeuvrability and safety was required, along with pavement degradation analysis, and analysis of the haulage route intersections for performance and safety. The expansion was approved, and the quarry operator and the Department came to an agreement on works required to maintain an acceptable level of performance of all aspects of the State Controlled Road network as a result of the development.

Pavement Design

Project: National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement (NDRAA) road reconstruction project

Location: Mackay/Whitsunday region

Reconstructed pavement designs were required as part of the NDRRA works and was included in PCE’s scope of works for the roads being designed by us. Each road had very different requirements and geotechnical conditions, requiring site specific solutions to be developed and in-depth analysis of the most cost effective outcome. This resulted in a great outcome for the community, where existing material was reused where possible to keep costs down, while still meeting the strict guidelines for new road pavements to achieve the greatest possible lifespan.

Construction Inspections and Certification

Project: Harbour City Central industrial unit development

Location: Mackay Harbour Road, Mackay

PCE was engaged to perform inspections throughout construction, provide assistance to the Contractor dealing with unforeseen issues arising on-site and provide certification of the completed works for the changes made to the existing intersection providing access to the boutique industrial development, Harbour City Central.
